Most patients undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment will consider freezing (vitrifying) their embryos (or advanced embryos called Blastocysts) if they are fortunate enough to get that opportunity. Not all fertilised eggs develop to blastocyst stage and be of the quality suitable to freeze. In the UK, where most patients have a single embryo transferred, there may be one or more suitable embryos after treatment which if they survived the freezing and the thawing process give patients another chance to become parents. Once embryos are frozen there is an associated annual storage fee patients need to be aware of, but once frozen they can be storage in the UK until the patient is 55 years of age. There is no evidence that the length of storage has any effect on the success rates which is reassuring.
